What kinds of counseling are offered?

I see adults for anxiety, depression, grief, abuse, and trauma. I also see couples for premarital or marital counseling  For more on this, see my Counseling Services page

What can I expect from counseling?

Counseling is a working relationship in which the client and therapist first get comfortable with one another. After hearing your story, we will together develop a plan of action including your goals for treatment and specific ideas for how to attain them. Examples of treatment may include: examining your “self-talk” then developing more rational thoughts; learning how to better relax when in the company of others; or examining how past hurts have influenced your current behaviors and learning more productive ones.

Why do I need a professional? Aren’t self-help books, friends, or prayer sufficient?

Having a strong support system is essential for good mental health. However, friends can be limited in their knowledge. They also may, out of good intention, give advice that is not helpful.

While the abundance of self-help information on the web and in print is readily available, it can be difficult and frustrating to know what is genuinely effective. They also are not specific enough to address your unique circumstances.

If you are ignoring your concerns or simply waiting for them to go away on their own, this may be a sign of frustration on your part from having tried all you know to do. Delaying help could impair your relationships, your health, and your performance. It could also prolong or increase anxiety and depression.

Prayer is terrific, but God has made us social beings who need each other. I believe God has invested skills and gifts within me so I can be here for you. Accessing help is nothing to be ashamed of — it is a sign of strength!

What are your fees?

My hourly rate is $80.
I also have a limited number of lower-fee time slots available for those struggling financially.

How do I make payments?

Payments can be made using cash, check, or major credit card (including health savings debit cards). Payment is due at time of session.

Do you take health insurance?

No, however, you may be eligible for reimbursement from your health insurance provider for “out-of-network” services. Ask your provider if they will accept a statement for “outpatient mental health services.” Also ask your tax preparer if you can deduct qualified health expenses from your taxes.

I do accept health savings account Mastercard or Visa cards, since they can be processed as credit cards.

If needed, I can refer you to an agency that accepts insurance. However, be aware that insurance companies require a mental diagnosis in order to authorize payment. As part of your medical record, this diagnosis may be seen by future or present employers and health insurance providers. Insurance providers also define what your goals should be and how long you can come for counseling.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions needed depends on the severity of the issue and your individual circumstances. Generally, the longer you have had an issue or the greater its impact on your life, the more sessions you are likely to need.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

Notify me of a need to cancel within 24 hours of your appointment by calling me at (859) 468-7534. Otherwise, you will be charged a $35 missed session fee. Exceptions to being charged would only include emergencies such as an accident or sudden illness. It would not include failing to make arrangements for childcare, time off work, or transportation.

What if I am running late for my session?

Feel free to call or text me at (859) 468-7534. Even though your session will be cut short, your usual fee will be due.

Can I follow you on social media sites? Can I subscribe to your blog? Can I leave comments?

Answers to these questions can be found on my Client Social Media & Electronic Transmission Policy.

Can you provide an evaluation for court or other legal purposes for me?

Because specialized training is needed, I cannot provide evaluations or expert testimony in legal situations.
